|
The Nintendo 3DS is the latest handheld console made by Nintendo. Released in February 2011 in Japan, March 27, 2011 in North America and Europe, the Nintendo 3DS is the successor to the Nintendo DS. As implied by its name, the 3DS notably supports stereoscopic 3D effects, though some models removed this functionality. Since the first model was released, several new models including the Nintendo 3DS XL, the Nintendo 2DS, the New Nintendo 3DS, and the New Nintendo 3DS XL consoles have also been released.
History
The Nintendo 3DS was released in 2011, featuring better technical specifications than the previous Nintendo DS, as well as improved software, such as improved networking capabilities, the ability to patch consoles, and an improved online store.
Despite generally positive reviews, the Nintendo 3DS initially sold poorly, reportedly due to its high price tag; a significant price cut was announced several months after its release, and customers who had previously bought the 3DS at this high price were given access to exclusive content that remains inaccessible to other 3DS owners. Since the price drop, alongside the release of several critically acclaimed titles, the Nintendo 3DS has sold over 73 million units worldwide,
F-Zero games
A new F-Zero game has not been released for the Nintendo 3DS. F-Zero is available for the console's Virtual Console service, but it is only available for owners of the New Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 2DS, or New Nintendo 3DS; F-Zero Maximum Velocity is also available on the Ambassador Program, and cannot be accessed by other 3DS owners.
Outside of the above, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS features Captain Falcon as a playable character, alongside a number of other references to the F-Zero franchise.
