A long jump is when a machine raises its fuselage (holding d-pad down) to extend their reach while jumping, preferably from a Jump Plate. This is crucial to being able to take shortcuts. It can even trigger Short Cut Fouls if pilots aren't careful. In F-Zero X and F-Zero GX, the machines fly like aircraft while in midair, losing speed while attempting to long jump, while in the other games, the machine tends to want to stay parallel with the ground, without losing speed.
